#Beginners Guide To Domain Authority – How to Increase it?

Beginners Guide To Domain Authority
Did you ever wonder why some sites rank for terms and queries even if they have written it at a later date and have less information than you? This is where domain authority comes into play. Domain authority not only helps you to rank for keywords but also makes your site appear authorities to search bots that means whatever you write is considered important. And this indirectly means more followers, more sponsored post requests, and more value of your blog.
If you wanted to know how to increase your domain authority, this is where you will get it all. In this post, I will explain all you need to take care while thinking to improve your DA. But before taking you for an information splash let me explain the core concept of domain authority.
What domain authority means and how it works?
Domain authority is a metric set by moz, to determine the authority of your site. It is a logarithmic value that ranges from 0-100. Which means you can easily attain a DA of 30 from 20 than a DA of 90 from 80.
Sites like Facebook, Google and Wikipedia have a DA score of 100 but that doesn’t mean it is easy to beat them. Even a domain authority of 70-90 is considered to be enough to make your blog influential.
Domain authority is a comparative value which means your site might see a degradation of domain authority if it is not updated or does not hold the quality signals true.
Domain authority depends on a number of factors, the most important being the number of backlinks to your site. Other factors include your site’s social signals, user experience, site loading time, traffic etc.
Domain authority isn’t a “single” score but as I said Moz calculates it considering a variety site signals. They are:
  1. MozRank: MozRank of a website is based on its link profile and ranges from 0-10; the higher the better. Mozrank emphasizes quality backlinks meaning a few link backs from high quality sites is considered better than a large number of backlinks from poor quality sites.
  2. Moztrust: Moztrust is like MozRank but it focuses on your proximity with authority links. Moztrust checks how well you have connections and networks with trusted websites. If a website linking to you is being linked to any authority site you are benefitted.
Suppose site A has linked my article on domain authority in its blogging resources post and this post is linked by some authority sites like an .edu site or search engine journal it’s my site that gets a bump in moztrust.
  3. Domain Age: Domain age matters a lot. A simple way to get this is work consistently on your blog without giving up. You will have sweeter results as your domain age increases with time. You can use this free Domain Age Tool provided by to check your domain age.
  4. Quality content: Content quality and quantity matters a lot in calculation of domain authority. I personally have seen my DA rise when I was consistent with blogging and posted regularly.

How to know your domain authority?

Domain authority is updated fortnightly. So there are so many chances to get an increment on domain authority in a short time.

You can check your domain authority by using Moz’s own toolbar called Mozbar. You can also check it from opensiteexplorer for free. If you still want handy and mobile solutions to check your domain authority on the go you can check it from sites like moonsy or smallseotools easily.

Domain authority vs. Page authority

Domain authority gives you the rank of the domain as a whole while page authority gives the score for that page only.
Domain authority is same for the root domain as well as sub domains while page authority varies accordingly.

How to Increase Domain Authority?

Increasing your domain authority is not an easy process but as they say nothing is impossible if you have a zest for it. Here are some of the tips to increase your DA. You can increase DA by focusing on the above factors only. Here are some tips to help you increase your mozrank, moztrust and finally domain authority.

1) Increase the number of root linking domains to your site:

When a number of domains or sites link to you, they certify your authority. This in turn increases your domain authority. Here are some quick tips to help you get more backlinks:
a) Write linkable content:
When you write a post try to read the title at the end and ask yourself “have I done justice to this post”? If you don’t get a “yes”, go back and write a piece that gets a yes.
Linkable content doesn’t come so easy; you have to be creative and willing to solve the problem of your reader. Write in-depth content that solves every doubt of the reader in a sense he doesn’t have to browse a second site for clearing his doubt.
If your content is epic, people will never hesitate to link you. Just like how I linked Neil Patel’s epic post on business quotes here.
b) Provide your creativity for free:
If you are a photographer or the likes of him, you can take pictures of nature or anything beautiful and showcase it on a section on your site. This can be done with a decent smartphone camera too.
Now you should announce that anyone can use those images for free on their site, provided they give a link attribution below the image. This will work wonders.
c) Put up a section named author’s quotes:
This will also work wonders because huge number of students and bloggers search for fresh quotes for their projects. And when someone mentions your quotes, they should give you a linkback.

2) Increase the social score of your domain:

By social score, I mean you should get more of content shared by maximum people. Social presence is also a metric that moz considers for allotting the domain authority. Here are some of the tips on increasing your social shares.
a) Write content that your audience can relate to:
It takes months to know your audience and their mindset. It is then you can write content that they can relate to. However, if you are a new blogger, you can start having an approach your target audience is set to resonate to.
Generally the content that has elements of humor or emotions is shared more by the people. Also, of a content has statistics or case studies, it gets more share compared to normal articles.
b) Ask your readers to get the content shared:
It’s better to ask than to feel sorry about not asking. Below your content you can put up a line asking the audience to share the post.
If you write long content like I do, just put a few share buttons in the middle of the content. Ana Hoffman does it, many others too.
c) Use share buttons above and below content:
Adding social share buttons in the beginning and to the end of the text is a great way to tell the reader what you want.
Additionally you can also add tweet buttons in the middle of the post. Use click to tweet to do that.
d) Promote fellow bloggers and influencers:
In order to get promoted by others, you have to promote them first. I think the 70:30 rule of promotion is great here. It states promote your fellow blogger’s and influencer’s posts 70 times and your own posts 30 times. This will make them notice your act of kindness and as a sign of courtesy they will start sharing your content too.
I don’t think I need to explain the bump in reach your content will get.

3) Get your site search engine friendly:

Who doesn’t like a search engine friendly site? Everyone does. Let us accept it; search traffic is the traffic that is most convertible. Because they are the ones who just typed your targeted keyword on Google (probably seeking solution) and when they land on your blog, they are ready to be converted.
Beside that, search engine friendliness helps you to get higher rankings and thus more authority leading to an increase in DA.
On-Page optimization:
a) Proper URL structure:
Have your site’s URL structure properly optimized. I would say short URLs are the best. Here is an example of a boring URL and a sexy, keyword targeted URL.
b) #Proper internal linking:
I have always said, internal linking is like giving backlinks to your own domain. Inbound links do a much in passing link juice to pages that would otherwise not have been able to see sunlight.
Internal linking a post also gives the reader, a view of other related content. Needless to say, this is the best way to decrease bounce rates.
I have a full post on internal linking, do read it here.
c) #Using proper keyword variations:
Keywords are always important from a search engine point of view. But after recent Google updates, its bots have become wiser and can now sniff related keywords too. This mean they can understand human speech and show up your post for a query related to your target keyword too.
I would suggest sprinkling some keywords that are related to or are synonyms to your main keywords. This is called latent semantic indexing.
#Off-page optimization:
Off-page optimization is as necessary as on page optimization in making a site search engine friendly. Here are some tips for making off page optimization to enhance your domain authority.
d) #Blog commenting:
Blog commenting is my favorite off page #SEO tips, let me explain:
Through blog commenting, you build a solid community of bloggers and they will also start commenting on yours. This has many benefits like:
  • You rank for user generated content in your comments
  • Decrease in alexa rank
  • Do follow backlinks (I will explain this below)
  • More exposure for your content.
  • Leads.
Bonus: Getting dofollow links is very easy. For this you have to comment on commentluv enabled dofollow blogs.

4) #Increase traffic to your site:

This is the most fundamental rule of blogging. You have to drive loads of traffic to the blog in order to gain authority. Here is how to do it:
a) #Write your content, daily:
Yes increase the frequency of your postings. Post at least 3 articles weekly in order to have enough content to rank and bring in organic traffic.
b) #Schedule your posts:
Schedule your posts for effective social sharing, in order to drive referral traffic when you are busy doing something else. I use HootSuite for it.
c) #Write evergreen posts:
Write evergreen and #SEO friendly blog posts to attract more #organic traffic. Here is how to write SEO friendly blog post.
d) #Post quality articles:
Posting 200-500 worded articles daily will not do any good to your site’s ranking. It will instead increase the bounce rates. I advise you to post quality stuff of not less than 1000 words. It’s okay if you post once a week. Your audience will know your schedule. This will also increase traffic to your site and subsequently your DA.
Over to you
So here were some of the most effective tips to increase your DA. I would say all these tips combined will get your site better in SERPs and also have loads of traffic.
